Mesch & Cod. Cod & Mesch. Either way you say it, all you really need to remember is that "greatness is upon us".
Or at least that's what their bumper sticker claims. This dynamic duo is composed of sophomores Jason Mesches (aka Mesch)
and Jacob Perlin (aka Cod). Their genre: musical comedy. Their mission: To make you laugh until you snort. Their sound and
message, I should say "messages"; because they do have many, is reminiscent of Tenacious D or Steven Lynch. But
don't be fooled, these guys are originals.
SV: What makes you different from other college bands? Mesch: Our genre is musical comedy. And we're not a full band, it's just the two of us. Cod: And I have no musical talent whatsoever. But I play a pretty mean tennis racket. M: We keep it raw and honest. Two schmucks. One guitar. It's about not taking anything seriously. C: Ever. When they aren't being inspired by the Barenaked Ladies, Bob Dylan ("the pimp style"), their mothers, or each other, they draw from their own every day experiences. Or your experiences. Honestly, just give them a story or maybe even just a word and they'll write a song about it (see sidebar). SV: Take us through the process of making a "Mesch & Cod" song. M: Well first we've gotta have a bottle of Manischewitz wine, that's pretty much essential. C: Usually one of us just walks into the room and we'll look at the instruments (the guitar and tennis racket) and our eyes meet....and we just know. Its time. M: To write a song. C: Yea. We get inspired by everyday life. Whatever happens to fill the room at that moment. Like the movie "Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead"; totally inspired our song "Don't Tell Mom I Did It in the Basement". And Mesch has one of those CVS Extra Care cards which we included in a song. I mean, do they really care, and where exactly is this extra care? It's something to think about. We like to make you think. You can expect anything and everything at a Mesch & Cod show. You may even get the feeling that even they don't know what they're going to do next, and you'd probably be right. But that's the great thing about these two. You never know what you're going to get. For example, what started out as a request to freestyle a couple of verses about The Student Voice turned into a full-out song about the publication. In the twenty minutes it took them to create the song they free-styled about the London Bridge (while trying to find a bridge for the song, mind you), broke into a rendition of John Mayer's "No Such Thing", contemplated how they could make fun of the Daily Orange in the song, and argued about whether there actually is a word that rhymes with "orange". It was quite a process to watch. Mesch dances around the room as he plays the guitar, Cod starts spitting out lines and drumming out the beat on his desk, and before you fully comprehend what is taking place, they have created a masterpiece. Guaranteed to make you laugh. Or at least chuckle. They'll accept a chuckle. Mostly they're about having fun and making sure their audience has fun, too. That's their biggest priority - well, among other things: SV: Does being in a band actually get you girls? M: That's why we do it C: That's the plan. I mean I do it for the children and for the love of music. The purity of it all. Mesch does it for the girls. Well, at least they're honest. |
